We read Criss Cross in our (adult) reading group. We started out meeting by reading favorite or important parts aloud. Reading parts aloud seemed to help those who did not connect with it in the first place. I think reading aloud a hearty chunk with a young audience before they started the book might help them connect with the characters and the form of the book. One of my friends in the group used multicolored post-its to mark each character and other colors to mark when a "criss-cross" occurred. Many in my group enjoyed the connection to A Midsummer's Night Dream and wondered if the two could be read together.
