I have been pondering Beth's question about the nature of the appeal of Criss Cross to those who have enjoyed this book--craft and construction or empathy with the characters and their stories? Although I admire much about the construction of Criss Cross, there were times when I was reading that I felt the author's voice as a self-concious intrusion. Her observations of her character's growth felt almost patronizing. Since I count myself among those who loved this book, I must conclude that it is the characters themselves that moved me and propelled me through this story.
