I also had not read Criss Cross before it won the award, and someone in a booth at ALA had warned me that it would not be suitable for elementary school students. I read it partly to see if I thought that was the case, and I found that I really enjoyed the book. Like others, I wanted to copy out quotations, and I identified with the feelings of the various characters. I do think that some of my 5th and 6th graders would relate to this book, although I haven't had a chance to share it with any of them yet. It reminded me of a "Ulysses" for young readers. Another writer who has used similar techniques in writing for young people is Aidan Chambers, especially in his brilliant N.I.K. (Now I Know), which does not seem to have many, if any, readers in the U.S. among young people. I think Chambers wrote for the reluctant and alienated readers he taught -- I'd like to know if his books are widely read in the UK.
