What an invigorating discussion of this year's Newbery winner! Thanks to the posters who have provided insight and first-hand reactions, both their own and those of children, all of it adds to the appreciation of the writing and the characters.

I want to add one small comment following on Cassie Wilson's observations: three "C" words, Criss Cross and Clasp. The ripple effect of the meaning of the word 'clasp,' referring to the necklace, is one more subtle entwining thread that stitches 'unplot' and characters together.
