Perkins asks us to believe in an America in which the least innocent thing that high school students do is illicitly learn to drive a stick shift in the driveway. I think a sense that these times are just slightly in the past lends a sort of sweetness and fuzziness -- a sense of nostalgia -- that is integral to the story.
