  As do a number of Paul Fleischman's books, especially
_Bull Run_, _Whirligig_, and _Seek_. I continue to admire the Newbery Committee that recognized the brilliance in his _Joyful Noise_ in the 1980s, again signalling that experiments with narrative voice were worthy of recognition.

(And, to bring this back to _Criss Cross_, I'm still pondering whether what I remember about it seemed postmodern. It did remind me that longer books seem to have come back into fashion, and not just for fantasy and sf.)
