[CCBC-Net] Criss Cross

I can't quite imagine Criss Cross set in contemporary times. If the author had included modern technology (think cell phones and IMing), it would have been a very different story, and if she hadn't, critics would have said it was unrealistic, if not anachronistic.

Perhaps my question would be better phrased as, "What purpose does the time setting of Criss Cross serve for you as a reader?"
