These two books were brought to my attention when they received Newbery honors, and I really enjoyed reading them. I was struck by their old-fashioned qualities. I loved the language in WHITTINGTON (my notes say it almost reads like a book by EB White). I appreciated the straightforward message (both hard work and reading are good) of THE PRINCESS ACADEMY and its fairy tale quality. What a contrast to the multiple perspectives of CRISS CROSS, the solid research and compelling narrative of HITLER YOUTH and the taut history of SHOW WAY and what a range of fine books! The committee should feel very good about the way their choices show off the variety of distinguished children's literature today.
