I appreciate Criss Cross for all its quirks. It surprised me on almost every page. When recommending it to people, I did find myself saying that "nothing really happens"... but I meant this as a positive comment! And, as a previous poster pointed out, that's not exactly true. A lot happens - just not in the traditional plot sense. People learn and grow, bonds are strengthened, emotions wax and wane, and a little necklace goes on a harrowing journey. Those are just a few of the many things that happen. Has anyone had experience sharing this with groups of students? I suspect it could spark meaningful discussion. At the same time, it strikes me as a very "personal" book because it deals with such private thoughts and therefore promotes introspection. I'm so thrilled that this charming book won the medal.

Hitler Youth is incredible. The narrative is so strong that I literally couldn't put it down. I think it is perfectly suited to its contemporary audience. I also loved Whittington. I learned so much! This is a complex book for younger readers, but the author does a great job of weaving the two stories and providing clues or hints to the reader along the way. I can't wait to read this aloud! Also, I liked that the animals and humans talk to eachother without any pretense - I was able to just accept that, without questioning whether it could really happen.
