For the next week on CCBC-Net, we turn our attention to the 2006 Newbery Award:

John Newbery Medal:

Criss Cross by Lynne Rae Perkins. Greenwillow / HarperCollins, 2005

Honor Books:
Whittington by Alan Armstrong. Illustrated by S.D. Schindler. Random House, 2005

Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow by Susan Campbell Bartoletti. Scholastic Nonfiction / Scholastic, Inc., 2005

Princess Academy by Shannon Hale. Bloomsbury, 2005

Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson. Illustrated by Hudson Talbott. Putnam, 2005

In the days immediately after the award announcment, we had quite a bit of dicussion, about Criss Cross in particular, but there is certainly much more to say about that book and the other recognized by the 2006 Newbery Committee. And no doubt many who hadn't yet had a chance to read the Newbery winner and honor books have now been able to do so and have your own thoughts to add.

The Newbery home page on the ALA web site to read more about the award, including terms and criteria, at

That link also features comments from 2006 committee chair Barb Barstow about the winning book:

"Writing in a wry, omniscient third-person narrative voice, Perkins deftly captures the tentativeness and incompleteness of adolescence," said Award Committee Chair Barbara Barstow. "In 38 brief chapters, this poetic, postmodern novel experiments with a variety of styles: haiku, song lyrics, question-and-answer dialogue and split-screen scenarios. With seeming yet deliberate randomness, Perkins writes an orderly, innovative, and risk-taking book in which nothing happens and everything happens."

What are your thoughts about, or experiences with, the 2006 Newbery titles?
