>From librarian Mary Clark:

I didn't have a copy of The Hello, Goodbye Window in my library, but I selfishly put in on hold at the public library the minute the Caldecott was announced. That week I was working with first graders on a Caldecott unit, so I included The Hello, Goodbye Window in the stack that we looked at (I only had time to read one book, and I'd already picked the books for both weeks.)
One of my favorite comments was, "That girl must really love her grandparents, because those pictures are really happy!" Since I'm trying to show the students that the best illustrations help tell and extend the story beyond the text, I think this child definitely got the message! Other comments noted that the illustrations were "squiggly", and "kinda messy like mine." Of the six first grades I worked with, two voted The Hello, Goodbye Window their favorite, which is very good considering it was not one I read, but only showed to the classes.
