Thank you to everyone who commented on the Geisel Award and the books recognized this year by the first Geisel Award committee. It will be exciting to see how the award itself, as well as our understanding of what makes outstanding books for beginning readers, develops in the coming years.
Today we shift our attention to the 2006 Caldecott Award winner and honor books.
The winner of the 2006 Caldecott award for the most distinguished illustration in a picture book for children was:
The Hello, Goodbye Window illustrated by Chris Raschka. Written by Norton Juster. Michael di Capua Books / Hyperion, 2005
There were four Caldecott Honor Books:
Rosa illustrated by Bryan Collier. Written by Nikki Giovanni. Henry Holt, 2005
Zen Shorts illustrated and written by Jon J Muth. Scholastic Press, 2005
Hot Air: The (Mostly) True Story of the First Hot-Air Balloon Ride illustrated and written and illustrated by
Marjorie Priceman. An Anne Schwartz Book / Atheneum, 2005
Song of the Water Boatman & Other Pond Poems illustrated by Beckie Prange. Written by Joyce Sidman.
Houghton Mifflin, 2005
You can read the terms and criteria for the Caldecott Award at http://www.ala.org/ala/alsc/awardsscholarships/literaryawds/caldecottmedal/caldecottterms/caldecottterms.htm
What are your thoughts about the 2006 Caldecott award titles?
