I work at a children's bookstore and have met many authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults at the store, children's literature conferences and bookseller conventions over the past five years. I have not met a single person whom I believe writes or illustrates to win awards. They have all had a special love for the projects that they have worked on and this really comes through in the personal conversations I've had with them. Someone writing or illustrating for the sake of winning an award wouldn't have that special connection with his/her books.
