[CCBC-Net] CCBC-Net Digest, Vol 7, Issue 6

For being in a capitalistic society, we don't reward children's literature with much capital, I'm afraid.

Work that is recognized is usually work that has influenced people--kids, librarians, teachers, parents. As a writer, I don't think anybody writes a work "targeted" toward a particular award. I certainly don't. You write it and then say, "hmm, this might have a shot at the Henry Bergh award, I will have to ask the publicist to be sure and send some copies to them for consideration," that sort of thing. But you have to write what is meaningful to you, first and foremost. When you have your heart and soul wrapped up in an idea you have the best chance of communicating it to others in a memorable way, and from that, awards may--or may not--flow.

I do find it useful to read award criteria, however. Not because I think there is an award equation where if I plug in the correct variables I get might get a Sibert sticker on the book, but because it gives me another way to evaluate my work and try to make it better.
