Having known Ted Geisel for many years and interviewing him on several occasions, I am thrilled that this award is being given in his name.
Always pioneering the importance of easy readers I began the I CAN READ POETRY BOOKS with HarperCollins back in l984 under the aegis of Charlotte Zolotow, my brilliant and beloved editor. SURPRISES was the first title in the series. I am now at work on my 8th I CAN READ POETRY BOOK.
I hope this award will also be used with OLDER students who have difficulty with reading problems. As a teacher, I always used easy readers with children who had reading problems in upper grades ; those who could not tackle 'grade level' books Calling them READING AMBASSADORS, I had them practice reading the books aloud , then going into lower grade classrooms, K-3, to do presentations. I also encouraged creative dramatics, puppetry, etc...all to give my 'slower' upper-grade readers a sense of self.
This did a great deal to get these students into reading , often leading to the development of better reading skills.
We all know that all 5-6th graders, even junior/senior high school students are NOT on 'reading levels.' Using this award as in impetus to get such students to read -- as a means of sharing is imperative.
