It is of deep interest and excitement to me to note the past CSK Awardees who have continued to develop creative excellence as demonstrated by recognition of children book publishing' most prestigious awards and "best books" lists. Of particular note are the winners of the John Steptoe New Talent Award. This award is an 'emerging talent award' given by the Coretta Scott King Book Award Jury to a new writer or illustrator. The productivity and excellence of the likes of the Ms' Sharon Flake, Sharon Draper, Eric Velasquez, and Jacqueline Woodson (not a Steptoe winner but a CSK Award winner before the existence of the Steptoe) to name a few, is clear justification for the immense pride the CSK Committee takes in the careers of these African American book creators. In the spirit of this visionary hindsight, I would like to extend a 'heads up' to all lovers of quality literature for children to the 2005 CSK John Steptoe New Talent Awardee, Jaime Adoff for his book: Jimi and Me.
