I'm very pleased that there is now an award for this important category of children's books.
I'm curious about the decisions that are made about formating a book. Could Suzanne Bloom's A Splendid Friend, Indeed been published in the standard size of a beginning reader? Was that considered? Who makes that kind of decision? I'm certainly glad that it was published as it is, but it's made me wonder about these decisions. (What would Arnold Lobel's Small Pig look like as a large picture book?)
And, for the Geisel Award, how will the committee screen out from all the picture books that are published in a year those that are suitable for beginning readers?
