1. YALSA desperately needs to institute an informational book award, a companion to the Sibert. That this year's Printz committee had the good wisdom to award JOHN LENNON a Printz Honor does not negate this fact. Nevertheless, as I stood/sat through the press conference, it was so exciting and satisfying to learn that Betsy Partridge's book would actually have a well-deserved medal on it.
2. Poetic justice: Yea, Steve Nugent! UNDER THE WOLF, UNDER THE DOG was one of my favorite two YAs of 2004. I would rank it far, far ahead of the book that beat it for Printz any day of the week. TENDING TO GRACE was a book I read and reread for its exquisite language, terrific story, and really cool old lady supporting character. I was jumping up and down over the great work the Schneider Family Awards committee did in recognizing these two titles.
3. But the one that really made me start tearing up was the award of the first Theodor Seuss Geisel Award to Cynthia Rylant and Sucie Stevenson. Not only have Henry and Mudge been part of my own family and of my work for ten years now, it could easily be argued that they have had a greater positive impact upon children than any other books in existence.
4. It's my year to get all excited about attending an Edwards Award Luncheon. Yea, Jackie! Yea, committee!
5. I had predicted that AN INNOCENT SOLDIER would win the Batchelder; I was ecstatic to be right on this one. This book easily made my own Best of 2005 list _http://richiespicks.com/users/stories/picks/best_of_2005.html_
(http://richiespicks.com/users/stories/picks/best_of_2005.html) , and I am really pleased tha--thanks to the good work of the Batchelder committee--this great book won't be quite as overlooked as it was otherwise destined to be.
