I (jwanamaker) posted my comments regarding the content of Criss Cross on Friday (1-27-06) so perhaps if you have been away from your computer all weekend you can just ignore my posting. I obviously skimmed through the letter asking that we wait to comment. Sorry.
I'll cut and paste my other comments from that posting here so you can delete the "spoiler."
I think Whittington by Alan Armstrong will be a great read aloud book. Reading recovery teachers will love the fact that their program is named and claimed as a successful one. I was very impressed all of the research that this book required. The bibliography that is included will be great for showing young writers how much "fact" goes into writing fiction.
I am thrilled to see that Bryan Collier's art was honored for Rosa. Each page needs close consideration in order to appreciate the mix of photos, textiles and oil painting. It is stunningly beautiful, and Nikki Giovanni's words aren't too bad either :-).
I read one of the Alex Award books, Glass Castle, by Jeanette Walls. It is an amazing memoir (all true) and led to the best discussion my book group has ever had. It was a "community reads" book in Neenah, WI where I live. Jeanette Walls gave a short talk yesterday and spent an hour answering questions about the book. She was an amazing speaker, very gracious and generous with her time.
In the Printz award department, I have only read the honor book, I Am the Messenger. I love all of Markus Zusak's books. I purchased this book last March in support of this author and the YA genre. I think MZ is an incredible writer.
That's all for me. I can't wait to hear what you all think about Criss Cross in mid-February.
