Karen, I did indeed write/illustrate ALIENS ARE COMING. I'm glad you like it! I'm actually really nervous about the book's release because it's my first nonfiction project, it's a strange topic, etc. I'm a bit fearful that people won't accept my cartoon style for nonfiction subjects (which I'm doing more of).... so I really appreciate your comments! Anything to help relive some of the nerves!
It was brave of you to open an independent store. Let's all hope that the big chains and the little guys can coexist happily. I know that doesn't always happen. This is a strange thing, but the store I work at and the little independent down the street do coexist happily. (this is a little off topic, so I apologize.) Whenever I help a customer who wants a book and they need it ASAP and no other stores in the chain have it, I send them to a small bookstore called Books of Wonder--they carry rare books and other stuff we just don't have. It's a cool store. I like helping out the little guy. I'm not doing this to be the evil worker who is trying to send all the business away, but rather to be helpful to everyone. If I'm really honest, hopefully customers will trust me and the store I work at MORE. Anyway, I was doing a signing at Books of Wonder a while back and told them that I often recommend their store to shoppers. A worker there said "Oh, we send people over to you guys ALL the time." A few other booksellers there said they did the same thing. I said "Really??" Somehow, in the big bad competitive NYC, both stores seem to be helping each other in some odd way. Each carries something the other doesn't. It would be super if that would happen all the time (I know it doesn't, though).
I will say that although I've never worked at a small bookstore, I bet it doesn't get mistaken for a
"library" like the big stores do. This happens all the time. Just today a man asked me where he could check out a book. Um...
And ON topic--I hope to grab a copy of Criss Cross soon. It seems that people either love it or hate it. I'm really interested to see how the artwork works with the text--should be interesting. Since I'm an author, however, I don't feel comfortable critiquing other authors' works. I will be reading the discussion next month with great interest.
