It was incredibly fun! I served on both the Caldecott and Newbery and opening each book that arrived was so exciting. Like 500 presents: "Is this going to be the one?" It was a pleasure as well as hard work. It made me think and re-think, read and re-read and really sharpen my critical skills. But those discussions at midwinter...it was as close as I may ever get to heaven. Fifteen people discussing deeply the same books that we had literally pored over the past twleve months. Spirited defenses, lively and lovely advocating of worthy contenders, hopes dashed and dreams coming true...it was amazing. As intense as the work was the experience is one I will always treasure - not least because of what each of my colleagues on the committee taught me and opened my eyes to!
