[CCBC-Net] Criss Cross

Is it fun? As the husband of a member of the 2005 Newbery Committee, I can say unequivocally YES! While I was understandably not privy to the committee's discussions, I did get to see every book that crossed our threshold -- and there were over 500 of them! A surprising number of them were obviously not eligible due to wrong publication year, foreign author, etc., etc. And many of those were from major publishers who you'd think would know better. I sometimes think they just cleared off their shelves.

It was also a lot of fun meeting the rest of the committee, along with the authors at ALA Chicago last June. We had a blast!

I did predict Kira-Kira for the medal and Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy for an honor, but that's a story for another time...

But is it fun? :) I've always wondered whether it was more a breakneck race to cover every worthwhile book that leaves you winded at the end, or a fantastic spin across the children's book world that consumes all your time yet leaves you ready for more when the awards are announced?
