To answer Maia's question, yes, it is for the most part fun, and it's a lot of work, too. I think most committee members feel an odd combination of exhaustion and exhilaration at the end of the process.
  The best thing about being on one of the award committees, in my opinion, is the book discussion at Midwinter. There's nothing quite like these in-depth discussions with a group of people who have all read the same books, often multiple times, and who come to the discussion so well prepared. It makes all the work in the months leading up to those few days well worth the effort.
