As someone who was a member of a Newbery Committee and had the honor of serving on this year's Notable Children's Books , I would like to respond to John Mason's comments. I avoid reading reviews and publicity material before reading the book. After I've read a book and had a chance to synthesis my own thoughts, I read as many reviews as possible for other perspectives and insights. As a committee member I hear opposing and concurring viewpoints at the Children's Book Committee at Bank Street and from our young reviewers. I am grateful to receive students' opinions in their written work and Mock Newbery discussions. I often pass galleys on to classroom teachers and content specialists like science teachers, school psychologists and social workers. When it comes to evaluating children's books as far as I am concerned there is no such thing as too much information.
