I was very pleased to see Alan Armstrong's first book, Whittington, recieve a Newbery Honor. The novel contains elements of animal fantasy and family story as well as a retelling of the tale of Dick Whittington and his cat, and all three threads come together as a triumphant homage to the power of reading and storytelling. I suspect it will become a classic readaloud as teachers and librarians begin to discover it.

Speaking to Robin et al's observations about big chain stores selling out of the Newbery winners: I noticed that Amazon.com now has a "13 to 14" day wait for this title by a previously unknown author, which shows the power of the Honor status as well.
