My Friend Rabbit DOES seem to be out from left field
... but look at who illustrated it. Eric Rohmann won the Caldecott honor in the 90s for Time Flies. His usual style is sort of surrealistic. His latest win is a departure from his normal style.
Well, at least illustrators are getting rewarded for taking some risks. Perhaps the illustration field will be prevented from going too stale as a result.
