I'm going to post an observation about the Newbery and Caldecott picks. I'm wondering what you all think of this.

>From what I've noticed this year and from past years,
the Newbery winner always seems to be a bit obscure. The Caldecott winner and honor books are usually books done by illustrators and author-illustrators who have already had previous recognition throughout the year. I've noticed the Caldecott picks are usually illustrated by the big names. Oftentimes the winner is done by a popular illustrator who has tried something a bit new for him/her.

I'm wondering why this is. My point, to some degree, can be proven by going to a large chain such as B&N. At the B&N I work at, we never seem to have the Newbery winners when they're announced but always have at least a few copies of the Caldecotts on hand. Do the Caldecott winners usually have a bit more marketing muscle? It seems that many of the Newberys never have that same popularity prior to being picked.
