The Pittsford Middle School Newbery Selection Committee has chosen The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan as their Newbery winner. The honor books selected were Day of Tears: A Novel in Dialog by Julius Lester, Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow by Susan Bartoletti and Listening for Lions by Gloria Whelan.

Additional books read by the students were: Chicken Boy by Frances O'Roark Dowell Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two by Joseph Bruchac Confessions of a Closet Catholic by Sarah Darer Littman Down the Rabbit Hole by Peter Abrahams Each Little Bird That Sings by Deborah Wiles Out Standing in My Field by Patrick Jennings Project Mulberry by Linda Sue Park Under the Persimmon Tree by Suzanne Fisher Staples

The committee consisted of 32 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students from Pittsford, NY.
