Newbery: tied between Day of Tears by Julius Lester and Witch's Boy by Michael Gruber

            Honor books: Each Little Bird that Sings by Deborah Wiles and The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall

 

Caldecott: I Ain't Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont, illus. by David Catrow

            Honor books: White is for Blueberry by George Shannon, illus. by Laura Dronzek and Show Way by Jacqueline Woodson, illus. By Hudson Talbott
