Here are the topics we'll be discussing for the next few months on CCBC-Net.
January Through January 22: National Book Award Young People's Literature, winner and nominees. Nominees for the 2005 National Book Award in the Young People's Literature category were Jeanne Birdsall for The Penderwicks (Alfred A. Knopf), Adele Griffin for Where I Want to Be
(Putnam), Chris Lynch for Inexcusable (Ginee Seo Books / Atheneum), Walter Dean Myers for Autobiography of My Dead Brother (HarperTempest / Amistad, Deborah Wiles for Each Little Bird That Sings (Harcourt). In November, The Penderwicks was named the winner. We'll spend the first part of January talking about this award and this year's nominees and winner.
January 23-31: Initial reaction to ALA Book Awards Announcement: The 2006 American Library Association Children's and Young Adult Literature Awards will be announced on Monday, January 23, at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio. We'll spend the final days of January sharing our initial reactions to the award announcements.
February February 1-7: 2006 Geisel Winners and Honors. The newest ALA children's literature award is the Theodore Suess Geisel award, which is being given for the first time in 2006. It goes to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished contribution to the body of American children's literature known as beginning reader books. We'll talk about the first Geisel Award books the during the first week in February.
February 8-14: 2006 Caldecott Winners and Honors: The Caldecott Award is for the most distinguished illustration in an American picture book for children. We'll spend the second week in February discussing the 2006 Caldecott winner and honor book(s).
February 15-21: 2006 Newbery Winners and Honors: This award recognizes the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. We'll spend the third week in Feburary talking about the winner and honor book(s) recognized by the 2006 Newbery Committee
February 22-28: 2006 Printz Winner and Honors: The Printz Award recognizes literary excellence in literature for young adults. We'll conclude the month of February talking about the 2006 Printz award and honor book(s).
March
March 1-7: 2006 2006 Batchelder Winner and Honors: The Batchelder Award goes to the publisher of the outstanding translated book for children published in the United States. We'll start the month of March with a discussion of this year's Batchelder winner and honor book(s). March 8-14: 2006 2006 Sibert Winner and Honors: During the second week of March, we'll talk about the 2006 Sibert Award winner and honor book(s). This award recognizes outstanding books of information published for children in the United States.
March 15-21: 2006 Coretta Scott King Winner and Honors: The Coretta Scott King Awards are given to an African American author and an African American illustrator for an "outstandingly inspirational and educational contribution" to literature for children. The books promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream. We'll talk about the 2006 CSK winners and honor books during the third week in March.
March 22-31: 2006 Belpre Winner and Honors: The Pura Belpre Awards go to a Latino/Latina writer and Latino/Latina illustrator whose work "best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth." This award is given every two years, and considers books from the prior two publishing years. We'll wind up our CCBC-Net discussion in March talking about the 2006 Belpre winners and honor book(s).
