I concentrate on YA lit, but there are still so many new titles that I have not had a chance to read! How do the people on award committees do it?!
Of the 134 YA books I read this year, 60 had publication dates of 2005 or 2004. Of those 60, the following are the ones I liked very, very much, for a variety of reasons.
2005 pub dates:
**Code Talker: a novel about the Navaho Marines of World War Two, by Joseph Bruchac.
**Boy Proof, by Cecil Castellucci.
**Runner, by Carl Deuker.
**The Carpet Makers, by Andreas Eschbach. (English translation 2005 - not published as YA, but I think some teens will enjoy it.)
**The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova. (Also not published as YA, and I ended up NOT buying it for our YA collection, mostly due to space considerations, but a teen recommended it to me.)
**Sleeping Freshman Never Lie: a novel, by David Lubar.
**Skybreaker, by Kenneth Oppel.
**Far From Xanadu, by June Peters.
**Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, by J. K. Rowling.
**Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld.
**Black Storm Comin?, by Diane Lee Wilson.
**Sandpiper, by Ellen Wittlinger.
2004 pub dates:
** Norman Tuttle and the Last Frontier: A Novel in Stories, by Tom Bodett.
** Dancing in Red Shoes Will Kill You, by Dorian Cirrone.
** The Blue Girl, by Charles de Lint.
** Gifts, by Ursual K. LeGuin.
** Airborn, by Kenneth Oppel.
** New Found Land: Lewis and Clark?s Voyage of Discovery: A Novel, by Allan Wolf.
But the "YA" book that I can not stop thinking about is one I finally got around to reading when the book sharing topic for our December department meeting was "teen friendly classics." I finally this year, after much resistance, read and loved LORD OF THE FLIES, by William Golding.
Best wishes,
Hope
