My favorites this year:

YA: Looking for Alaska (Green) and I am the Messenger
(Zusak). I personally loved the ending of Messenger, which I won't discuss any further because it would be such a spoiler.

Middle Grade: Whittington (Armstrong) and Whales on Stilts
(Anderson). I had a nine-year-old ask me for all of Alan Armstong's other books, but I had to tell her I was hoping for more of them too, since this is his first novel. My young patrons think Whales on Stilts is hilarious, the kind of book where they have to come in and give me the play-by-play of their favorite scenes.

Nonfiction: Let me Play (Blumenthal).

Picture book: Leonardo the Terrible Monster (Willems). My two-to-five-year-old storytimers and their parents were hanging on every turn of the page.
