Here are a few of my favorites from this year --

Novels: The Penderwicks- by Jeanne Birdsall A good story, with refreshingly odd characters, and a wholesome, old-fashioned feeling story without being preachy or didactic. Good read-aloud choice.

The gravesavers : a novel by Sheree Fitch - This Canadian novel takes place on the Nova Scotia coast-- a young girl spending the summer with Grandma finds a skull on the beach and mystery ensues
Very interesting ghost story without being terribly scary. Really gives the feeling of place.

Picture books: Lizette's Green Sock by Catharina Valckx I love the story in this book. Originally published in French, it does not seem to have lost anything in translation!

Summertime Waltz by Nina Payne, Illus. By Gabi Swiatkowska Incredible illustrations make this summery poem come alive.

Russell the Sheep by Rob Scotton Russell the Sheep cannot sleep, but what will he count
sheep? The illustrations are really clever, and it makes a fun storytime read-aloud.

The Hello, Goodbye Window by Norton Juster, illus. By Chris Raschka Sweet story, beautifully illustrated. (I gave it a starred review in SLJ)
