Greetings, everybody,
Must admit I haven't read all of the messages on this topic, but would like to share two things with regard to Nancy Drew and other series books.
First, in a shameless act of self promotion, I invite you to read my homage to Nancy Drew in a column I wrote in June 2003. It's posted at http://wvls.lib.wi.us/RhinelanderDistrictLibrary/2003%20Columns/nancy_drew.htm
Second, there's a "rest of the story" to my literary dressing down by a colleague in the ladies room as mentioned at the link above. Our exchange was witnessed by another children's librarian (never mind where she was or what she was doing when she overheard!) who scooped me up after the encounter and took me under her wing. It was this mentor, Marathon Co. Public Library children's librarian Florence Hensey, who told me how important series books are to third and fourth graders who generally go through a "collecting phase" around that age and explained the practical value of the role of series books in establishing the reading habit as a springboard to better literature.
