Many of the books cited during our discussion have been either formula books (series) or linked books (sequence).
For example, I think of the Ramona, Little House and Harry Potter novels as being part of a linked sequence, rather than a series; and I see Bonnie and Arthur Geisert's four "Small Town" books as being in such a sequence, as well.
Rather than being a value judgment, this has been my attempt for some time to understand the difference and - for my own thinking, anyway - to develop a working vocabulary for understanding and welcoming excellence in each type of writing.
