I'm not sure who said it, but I agree wholeheartedly about the comment about kids returning to series books because of who they find there. Characters, if written well, change at a pace (if they change at all) that is acceptable. It's always a wonderful thing to have friends, even paper ones, you can rely on to always be there for you. And as we know, so many kids don't have that kind of stability and security in their lives. As a librarian, I found that one of the most difficult tasks on a very limited budget was determining which series to latch onto since so many are coming out these days. More often than not, one would be adopted into our collection after someone donated it and a test drive proved it to need the others. Among the ones that stick out were Deltora (which sadly many died or disappeared, they were loved so hard), Junie B Jones,Goosebumps, Magic Tree House and for older kids, the Sweep series (Cate Tiernan) and Angus, Thongs, etc. I will gladly speak up for the older series though! For whatever reason, old standards were not completely overlooked in our libraries. I remember two girls coming up one day, one with a stack of Nancy Drew and the other Trixie Belden. They had decided that each was "in charge" of reading the series. :) Even The All-of-a Kind Family still saw circulation. Now in the classroom, the only "series" I see regularly is Harry Potter, though some Goosebumps pop up. Seems this is more of a DK book crowd..... Oh, and does Betsy-Tacy count? They still rank among my faves! Kelley Milton formerly of Calais Free Library, Maine now teaching in Melbourne, FL
