Last month's Booklist had an article on series books. If you have not seen it, you might want to track it down.
The main point (she says, not going to look it up) is that it is time to revisit "our" traditional dismissive attitude toward series fiction. They had statistics on its perennial popularity, and evidence that it certainly does help cement reading skills.
