My responses are similar to Anne's observations. No one has ever checked out Nancy Drew. One boy asked once about Hardy Boys and may have read one book. I'm curious to hear about those two series, as well as the re-released Trixie Belden (which I loved as a kid).
The kids here still read Goosebumps and especially enjoy the "You Choose the Scare" line. They also like the Matt Christopher sports fiction. Some like The Magic Tree House and Captain Underpants. A few read The American Girls. Hey L'il D by Bob Lanier, the Boxcar Children, and Amber Brown go out in spurts. One boy really likes the Nate the Great series, and I have another who was very interested in Roy's A to Z Mysteries.
No one here is reading The Babysitters Club, but some do enjoy the Baby-sitter's Little Sister (Karen) series. I've seen little/no interest in Bailey School Kids or Encyclopedia Brown (I wonder if that will change if a movie is made next year...saw that as a possibility in Publisher's Weekly).
I do think series books serve an important purpose in familiarizing students with the pattern of stories. They are also non-threatening ways to movie from easy readers into chapter books.
