Moms and Dads and toddlers and I love to sing along with Dan Zanes singing Bushel and a Peck while I turn pages of Rosemary Wells's illustrated book of the same title with lyrics by Frank Loesser. This is such a great discussion and sharing. Thanks, Mary Bauer

Excellent point, Grace. Song books are a great way to introduce books to babies...a few of my favorites are: Froggie Went a Courtin', Old MacDonald, Cows in the Kitchen, Seals on the Bus, Over in the Meadow, My Aunt Came Back and of course, the one you've already mentioned: Hush Little Baby.

I've enjoyed this topic, especially since we're about to revise our recommended reading list for infants and toddlers. (You can see our current list on the library website: www.sfpl.org, then go to "Kids," then "Recommended Reading," then "Never Too Young: Books for Infants and Toddlers.")
But, I want to put in a plug for song books for the very young... Those in picture book format. I became a convert many years ago when I was given a copy of Aliki's HUSH LITTLE BABY
(sadly OP) at a baby shower. I sang the book as I showed my daughter the pictures. I think the first picture of the "baby" on mother's lap caught her fancy. From then on she wanted to hear stories while sitting on our laps. We shared that book for years. Luckily, there are other picture book editions of that song currently available (Shari Halpern; Sylvia Long; and one due out in the new year by Brian Pinkney). Other favorites: Peter Spier's THE FOX WENT OUT ON A CHILLY NIGHT (we all still know the words); Aliki's GO TELL AUNT RHODY; Susan Jeffers' ALL THE PRETTY HORSES (OP, but other versions are available). Raffi's books weren't around when our daughter was little, but I'm sure I would have used them in the same way.
A few favorite books that I don't believe have been mentioned...
Ruth Bornstein. LITTLE GORILLA. Nancy Tafuri. SPOTS, FEATHERS, AND CURLY TAILS. Nicki Weiss. WHERE DOES THE BROWN BEAR GO?
