Hi Everyone, I have so enjoyed reading everybody's responses to this topic. I find it affirming to see so many of my favorites already mentioned. I keep a reading journal of all the books I read to my daughter (who just turned two) to help in my reader's advisory work at the library but also find it fun to look back over the list every couple months to see how her interests have grown. At the risk of duplicating other responses here is are some of our all-time favorites to date:
Infant >1 Black on White White on Black both by Tana Hoban Time For Bed/ Where is the Green Sheep by Mem Fox Good Night Moon Blankie by Leslie Patricelli If You Were My Bunny by Kate McMullan More More More Said The Baby by Vera Williams Chicka Chicka ABC (Board Version) Sheep in a Jeep, Shop etc. by Nancy Shaw Napping House by Audrey Wood Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell Snowy Day & Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats Little Gorilla by Ruth Bornstein Where's My Teddy by Jez Alborough Rumble in the Jungle by Giles Andreae Is Your Mama a Llama? by Deborah Guarino
Toddler < 1 Kitten's First Full Moon Goodnight Gorilla Chicken Bedtime is Really Early by Erica Perl Calico's Curious Kittens by Phyllis Limbacher Tildes This Place in the Snow by Rebecca Bond Wild About Books by Judy Sierra Leonardo the Terrible Monster by Mo Willems Little House Little Town by Scott Beck Where the Wild Things Are Ten Apples on Top/Hop on Pop (virtually any 'I can read book' by Dr. Seuss) Scrubba Dub/Tickle Tum by Nancy Van Laan Ten Little Fish by Audrey Wood Cornelius P. Mud, Are You Ready for Bed? by Barney Saltzberg Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney Hooray for Fish by Lucy Cousins (Also anything Maisy) Baa Baa Black Sheep by Iza Trapani (singing version) Tanka Tanka Skunk! by Steve Webb Sleepy Cadillac by Thatcher Hurd Feathers for Lunch by Lois Ehlert Max books by Rosemary Wells Richard Scarry (loves to look at on her own) DK concept books (loves to look at on her own)
Some observations: My daughter loves a well-done rhyme! Even at a very early age, she loved 'Rumble in the Jungle' which I wouldn't have thought would hold the interest of a child under a year. She also loves it when I sing...'Baa Baa Black Sheep' and 'If You Were My Bunny' are both books designed to be sung (but don't have to be). If anyone has suggestions on more 'singing' books, I would welcome suggestions.
Thanks Sara VanCleef
