Alison,
My suggestion would be the hot-off-the-press October release from Chronicle books PIRATE PUP by Caroline Stutson and illustrated by Robert Rayevsky, ISBN: 0811842398.
I'm dying to get a copy of it from my library to see for myself all the buzz around this title. With her permission, I'm sharing writer Lisa Brown Roberts' post to the books4children listserve here,
"Pirate Pup is a fabulous book! I got the last one available at Cherry Creek TC a few weeks ago. It was on an end aisle display, facing out :) --- My son loooovvvesss it! He has been obsessed with pirates since last Christmas. He even has pirate jammies! And an eye patch, sword, Jolly Roger flag, etc. etc. So unless there is a blizzard, we will be at the pj party! [story time/booksigning at the Tattered Cover in Highlands Ranch] -- Everyone - this really is a wonderful book. It has Caroline's usual clever twists and wonderful language, and the artwork is fabulous. Caroline's books are those rare specimens that adults enjoy as much as kids, even on the 99th reading."
Here's a bit of the pub marketing description for it. Book Description Welcome to the world of Pirate Pup and his canine crew as they set off on their good ship Rover in search of buried treasure. X marks the spot, and the dogs have found it-but a shipload of cats is in hot pursuit. What is the mysterious treasure, and who will have it in the end? A jolly sea chanty tale combined with lively illustrations will thrill young pirates.
About the Author Caroline Stutson has been a puppeteer and storyteller, has taught kindergarten and special reading, and is the author of several books for children including Night Train and By the Light of the Halloween Moon. She lives in Colorado with her dog, Maxie, and her cat, Maisie. Robert Rayevsky was born in Russia and now lives in Massachusetts with his family, three cats, and a miniature dachshund. His many children's books include Under New York, by Linda Oatman, and The Sleepy Men, by Margaret Wise Brown.
