Very young babies (0-6 months) really respond to high contrast illustrations, often in black in white. Babies eyes are still developing when they are young, but these books grab their attention right away when softer, more pastel illustrations do not. This often seems to be a surprise to young parents who are used to softly colored baby items.

There are a few really great high contrast books:

Black on White by Tana Hoban White on Black by Tana Hoban I Kissed the Baby by Mary Murphy It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw

Byron Barton's books are also good for bright, bold colors, as are the Maisy books by Lucy Cousins.

If anyone has any other suggestions for high contrast illustrations for the VERY young, I would love to hear them.
