This is definitely one of the areas in which publishing has dramatically changed during the (ahem) many years I have been a librarian. There are such wonderful books now to read aloud at a baby story time, that involve rhythm and rhyme, just like babies not only love, but also need in order to develop early literacy skills. Yes, indeed, they love the books with photos of babies. At our Baby Steps story time we select books that are short, relevant to the world of an infant, and fun for the parents as well as the babies. That way they'll want to read it themselves. We intersperse lap bounces, tickles and finger rhymes between the stories. We give each parent a rhyme sheet, with an early literacy tip on it so that they understand why we do what we do at each session.
If you would like to receive our bibliography of recommended books for babies just contact me off line. But here are some of our all-time favorites:
Pots and Pans by Patricia Hubbell Bunny and Me by Adele Greenspun Baby Goes Beep by Rebecca O'Connell Pillow Pup by Diane Ochiltree Peek-a-Moo by Marie Cimarusti The Big Book of Beautiful Babies by David Ellwand Any of the cardboard books by Roberta Intrater All Fall Down by Helen Oxenbury Big Fat Hen by Keith Baker If You See a Kitten by John Butler Kitten's First Full Moon by Kevin Henkes Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown The Three Little Kittens by Lorianne Siomades
There's just hardly anything better than a room full of adults with babies on their laps, all of them bouncing with "This is the way the ladies ride," or giggling with a tummy tickle, or joining in on the "beep" in Baby Goes Beep. It's what this job is all about!
