Some of my favorite books for babies are those by Helen Oxenbury. Her illustrations of babies are so simple, appealing, and expressive. Big board books like _Tickle, Tickle_, _Wave Goodbye_ and _Clap Hands_ are great for reading aloud at a baby storytime. The simple rhymes and actions are ones that babies enjoy and can often follow. Smaller board books like _I Can_, _I See_ and _I Hear_ are great for one on one sharing. For each subject, simple pictures that babies will recognize are shown. For the one to two year old, the Tom and Pippo series (also by Helen Oxenbury) are my all time favorites (many of these appeared in Babybug, by the way). Here there is a story, but short enough for the beginning listener, and always sweet and satisfying.
Before I had children of my own, I mostly dismissed lift the flap books as gimmicky. But their appeal to children is undeniable -- it's like the early childhood game of peekaboo. And there are a few that qualify, I think, as quality books as well. Our all time favorite has to be Rod Campbell's _Dear Zoo_. The cast of animals and the desire for a pet, just makes for a good story. Lucy Cousin's Maisy books are also staples of our baby bookshelf (both the lift the flap ones, and the others as well.) I think the bright colors, bold outlines, and short, everyday stories add up to child appeal. As someone else mentioned, books with photographs, especially faces, are other favorites
-- such as Margaret Miller's _Baby Faces_ (and several others with great photographs like _Peekaboo Baby_ and _What's on My Head?_).
As someone who used to do baby storytime, I love this topic, and am looking forward to hearing more suggestions!
