As a grandmother of two year old twin boys, it has been a great pleasure to plunge back into the world of picture books again and to test the market so to speak ;-) One of the best changes since my sons were young has been the advent of so many excellent board books for the very smallest of readers. These durable wonders have moved WAY beyond the very simple ABC and number books that were available 25 years ago. My own sons loved books and were reasonably careful but we still stored the books out of reach until they were over 2. But we have been able to keep the board books on the lowest of shelves and the twins can help themselves and "read" anytime they want to. They are already passionate and opinionated readers and here are some of their favorites.

Sandra Boynton's inspired silliness especially Moo, Baa. La La La, Pajama Time and But Not the Hippopotamus

Eric Carle's The Very Busy Spider, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See and the Very Hungry Caterpillar

Peggy Rathmann's Good Night Gorilla (read so much it is falling apart)

Mo Willem's The Pigeon Loves Things That Go

Jane Yolen How Do Dinosaurs Count to Ten?

And a current favorite is Animal Alphabet by Alex Lluch. So...simple alphabet books are still good ;-)

They are loving some "regular" books as well especially Knuffle Bunny and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems and a new one, Traction Man is Here by Mini Grey.

I am enjoying this discussion and taking notes!
