Has anyone mentioned Tony Johnston's The Ghost of Nicholas Greebe? This is my favorite scary picture book to read aloud. I like that the text allows for a more goofy or more grim reading, depending on the age (and attitude) of the listeners, and S.D. Schindler's illustrations have a colonial New England look I've enjoyed using with elementary school groups in Maine and Vermont.
