Skeleton Man won the RI Children's Book Award because kids loved the tension. I've read Janice Del Negro's Lucy Dove to 4th graders, and they love the story and the creepy illustrations by Leonid Gore, which I don't show except for the double spreads until after reading the story. Melody Allen

The lower elementary kids love Bony Legs, by Joanne Cole and Tailypo , the Paul Galdone version. These two books have made many kids love folktales in my building. I read these two at Halloween to the kindergarten kids and they ask for it for years afterwards.
Skeleton Man by Bruchac is big with upper el.
