(you're allowed a vacation now and then) that fingers are tapping the keyboard, not just the moment you hold in your hand The Book with Your Name on it. For a stupendous discussion of the power and influence of writing in general and novels in particular, read Jane Smiley's new 13 Ways of Looking at a Novel. She speaks about many many things, including how a novelist "works," and how the novel form has changed the course of history.
