I think there are a wide variety of things that can make a successful reading environment, but one thing they all seem to have in common are adults who love books! I think when kids hear their parents, caregivers and teachers talk about their own favorite genres, books and authors then then the enthusiasm just trickles down. But since we're making lists here's mine:
* Books of their own. Kids who own books, read them.
* Time to read. Every. Single. Day.
* Ditto for being read aloud to. (If you haven't yet gotten your copy of HOW TO GET YOUR CHILD TO LOVE READING by Esme Rajii Codell it is my favorite resource for read-alouds by theme, age, gender, holiday etc. etc. etc!)
* Introductions to a wide variety of genres and authors and projects in the arts that extend the book beyond its pages.
*Last, but really first: Access to a fabulous librarian who has the time to talk to kids about books and who isn't forced to prepare kids for standardized tests or library skills the whole time she sees them!
I've enjoyed reading everyone's lists.
Best,
Tracie
