The CCBC has several special events coming up this fall. For this of you who will be in the Madison area, mark your calendars for these opportunities:

The Eighth Annual Charlotte Zolotow Lecture: Angela Johnson

Angela Johnson will deliver the 8th annual Charlotte Zolotow Lecture on Wednesday, October 5, 7:30 p.m., at the Wisconsin Union Theater on the UW-Madison campus. Ms. Johnson is the recipient of the 2004 Michael Printz and Coretta Scott King awards for her novel "The First Part Last. She is the author of numerous other highly regarded books for children and teens, including novels, poetry and picture books. She received a pretigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2002. This is a free public lecture. No tickets will be required.

"Red-Scarf Girl": A Speech by Author Ji-Li Jiang

Author Ji-Li Jiang will deliver a free public lecture on Saturday, October 15, at 3 p.m., in the On Wisconsin room of the Red Gym, 716 Langdon Street, on the UW-Madison campus. Ji-Li Jiang is the author of the award-winning memoir for young adults "Red-Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution" (HarperCollins, 1997), as well as "The Magical Monkey King: Mischief in Heaven: Classic Chinese Tales" (HarperColins, 2002).

This event is sponored by the Cooperative Children's Book Center and the Friends of the CCBC in conjunction with the Wisconsin Book Festival.


Reading to Babies

Susan Straub, founder of the Read to Me program (http://www.readtomeprogram.org/), will present her new film, "Reading to Babies," at the CCBC on Friday November 4, 2005, from 1:00-2:30. The 18-minute film focuses on a diverse group of parents and their babies to show the complex interplay involved in reading aloud to infants.

After the screening, Susan will discuss her innovative program, which was initially aimed at teen mothers in the New York Public school system.
